We all did things to each other as we would have done to ourselves?
In business today we can’t get away from the subject of Employee Engagement. It is the Holy Grail for any company wanting to be successful. There is an unending litany of research that lays heavily on our minds and seemingly beseeches us to strive for nothing but the most engaged employees.
For a decade or more Gallup has been showing us how “into work” our people really are, the fancy term for employee engagement. And whether we like it or not, the average results over the decade haven’t changed all that much…
- 29 out of 100 of us are engaged
- 54 out or 100 are not engaged
- 17 out of 100 are actively disengaged
72% of your employees are either not engaged or worse, are actively disengaged!
Those aren’t very reassuring stats when you consider the thousands of companies who are scrambling all over themselves to sell corporate America every conceivable kind of communications program, training program, software application, analysis and research activity and recognition program that promise to make your employees the most engaged employees of this century!
So maybe there’s another way to start on this long journey of employee engagement.
In his short book “Smile and Move” Sam Parker makes this entire employee engagement process seem so simple.
For all of us, especially our business leaders…take a moment and ask yourself what you want to see more of, and then be what it is that you want.
- More enthusiasm. Less cynicism.
- More approachable. Less eggshells.
- More patience and kindness. Less grumpiness.
- More encouragement. Less withholding.
- More listening. Less telling.
- More time, effort, and care.
Do what you think is most important for everyone; practice the simple and powerful message in the Golden Rule, and you can achieve amazing results within your organization. Creating employee engagement may be just as simple as that.
And it doesn’t cost a dime!
